2026 Hurricane Prepardeness
Forecast and Information:
The prediction for this 2026 hurricane season is a low level of activity, but that doesn’t mean that there will be no damaging storms. It’s best to start preparing early, as the saying goes “It only takes one!” Weather Tiger explains the effects of current weather conditions (like El Nino) that are creating the future season we will have. If that’s interesting, their Substack is full of more information on weather and hurricanes and is a great follow.
The hurricane season begins June 01 and ends November 30.
The National Hurricane Center website has a map of all current storms in the Atlantic and Pacific.
Leon County has a text/email alerts through Leon Alerts that will keep you up to date on inclement weather that includes hurricanes, tornados, and strong thunderstorms.

There will be a new cone graphic that helps viewers determine risk of hit. This new graphic is more colorful.
Build A Disaster/Survival Kit
The city of Tallahassee has a few events to help residents prepare for possible disaster, one is the PREP Workshops run in various locations. Online help includes a Step-by-Step guide that is immensely helpful. THe city suggests using a bucket to store the kit in as the bucket is useful during these times.
Leon Couty has a webpage for hurricane preparedness as well. Also, a printout guide that explains the kit, what each stage of the hurricane preparedness means, hurricane timelines, aftercare, evacuation explanations, and other survival guide needs.
The CDC has a Hurricane Planning page
Florida Disaster has a disaster kit list as well
The US government has a disaster kit list, in multiple languages (English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Tagalong, Vietnamese, Mandarin).
Emergency Information Contact Numbers:
911 is the gold standard for EMERGENCY needs for Tallahassee/Leon County. Please note, hurricane emergencies are not:
stubbing your toe
having no internet
inability to watch the Golden Girls because the power went out
not having the correct bologna for your sandwich
discovering that your spouse snores
etc.
Leon County’s Citizens Connect webpage has information on emergency shelters, sandbag locations, power outages, road obstructions, and disaster prep guides.
Non-Emergency Information
DigiTally app, download this app for city non-emergency city requests. While not totally useful for on the spot hurricane requests, for the weeks and months after (and truly, for all non-emergency future needs) this will be the best way to contact city support.
