History

The City of Tallahassee acquired the 72+-acre tract of land in March of 1985. The land was previously owned by Dr. Joe Henry and was named after him.

The City received a Land and Water Conservation Grant (through the State Department of Natural Resources) that matched funds raised by the City and a contribution from the donor, Dr. Joe Henry. The park is part of the National Recreation and Park Association.

The first phase of the park was done in 1986 with a grant from the Florida Recreation Assistance Program. This particular stage included picnic facilities, a playground area, and trails intended for nature walking. The next few stages centered on four (4) picnic shelters, one large pavilion (with tables for picnics), a comfort station (includes bathrooms), the extension trails (walking, nature, and hiking), several benches, and a parking lot. In 2020, work was started on new metal roofs for the picnic pavilions.

Playground

The playground has regular and baby swings, slides, climbing equipment, tire swings, see-saws, and zip lines. The ground is wood mulch for comfort.

Trails

The trail is a 2.2-mile loop, featuring a 1.3-mile mixed-use trail. There is also a boardwalk at the lake. The trail loop is a moderate walk, appropriate for most skill levels. It’s mostly used for hiking, walking, and running. The asphalt path is only a 0.45-mile stretch. All trails are marked by the Parks and Recreation Department (see below for examples).

The forest surrounding the trail is a mature forest and the trail leads down to a stream.

Basketball Court and Fields

The basketball court and large open field are located off the trailhead. The basketball court is a half-court (only one hoop).

Animal Watching

A. J. Henry Park is a great spot for bird watching, especially in the area surrounding the lake and the lower (north) parking lot. During migration in the Spring and Fall, the trails will be best for seeing the birds. Birds that can be found by season include:

Spring: Mississippi Kite Raptor, Broad-winged Hawk, Limpkin (uncommon), Green Heron, White Ibis, Yellow-throated Vireos, Magnolia Warblers, and American Redstarts

Summer: Mississippi Kite Raptor, Broad-winged Hawk, Limpkin (uncommon), Green Heron, and White Ibis,

Autumn: Limpkin (uncommon), Green Heron, White Ibis, Yellow-throated Vireos, Magnolia Warblers, American Redstarts, Ovenbird, and Veery bird
